Autumn Pageantry
Why do you hide your beauty from the eye
with summer garments all in somber hues?
Perhaps because you simply are too shy,
Just knowing you cannot match heaven’s blues.
Now that the autumn-time has reached the hills,
you have matured beyond the summer’s youth.
You proudly display petticoats and frills,
and radiant pigments that show you in truth.
Our Lady Aspen drapes in brilliant gold,
as old Sir Maple sports a crimson coat.
And Madame Buckeye finally can unfold
the silky orange so light it seems to float.
Of all the autumn glory in the land,
I love the seedling planted by my hand.
